Boat Battery Maintenance and Testing

Keeping your batteries clean and maintained is a great idea as it will help prolong the life of them. Cracks and leaks are more visible if you keep your battery clean but just make sure you wear some protection on your hands like acid resistant gloves and goggles.

Below are some quick steps for battery maintenances:

  • Ensure that you tighten the vent caps and make sure that they are secure.
  • Buy a terminal connection cleaner and clean the terminal connections with this tool
  • Clean the top area of your battery with a mixture of baking soda and water then rinse the whole battery with fresh clean water.
  • Get some petrolium jelly and smear it on the connectors
  • Make sure the location where the battery is sitting is dry and doesn’t get damp during use.

Finding problems with the battery

Start by visually inspecting the batter to make sure there are no cracks, dirt or corrosion on the terminals. Batteries with external damage can not be used anymore and must be disposed of and recycled.

Next check the cables and connectors. Make sure they are clean, have not frayed and have their insulation intact. Make sure you tighen them to manufacturer standards.
