Outboard motor ignition problem checklist.

The following checklist is designed to organize your search through the ignition system and the tests that follow will help you to pinpoint the source of the problem. Each manufacturer uses a different wire colour code and therefore there is a slightly different test procedure for their respective systems, but by following this guide while viewing a color diagram for the brand of motor you are using you should be able to trace through your system and isolate any CD ignition system problems in the rare instance that they occur.

These test sequences assume that you have already eliminated the possibility of fuel related or compression related problems.

  1. Begin by checking to see if your engine is equipped with a fuse for the ignition system. If it is, check the fuse and replace if it is needed.
  2. Check the plug wires for any fraying or splits, replace if needed.
  3. Test the ignition coils.
  4. Test the outputs of the charge coil, sensor coil and the ignition circuit. Use a multimeter and a Mercury DVA tester.
  5. Test all engine stop circuits.
  6. Test the mercury tilt switch if your engine is equipped with one.

    Turn key, starter engages and doesn’t turn or goes really slow. Was slow to act last season and now won,t start.
