Below are a few pointers for storing your outboard motor for long periods of time, for example during winter etc.
- You will need to get to your motor’s carburetor in order to do the following, so please go ahead and remove your silence cover.
- Next you need to hook a spare hose to your motor’s water intake.
- Let the engine warm up after cranking it. While the motor is running at fast idle incease the speed ever so slightly and get ready for the next step.
- Disconnect the engines fuel line and grab your fogging oil and spray a some into each carburetor while the motor is slowly running out of fuel and stalling. Do this until it completely stalls.
- Cleaning and waxing your boat motor can never go astray so it’s always good to do this before storing it away for winter.
- Spray some corrosion protection onto the engine and make sure that when storing your motor that it is in the vertical/down position so that the water doesn’t stay in there and freeze.
- Take the Battery out of the motor and attach it to a charging station making sure you continue to charge it now and then so that it’s not dead when you go to use it after winter.
- Use a good quality cover for your boat that breathes, the cover must be ideal for winter and your local store should know which is the best for your situation.
